Information about umweltplakette environmental stickers and environmental zones

The first cities to create these environmental zones were Berlin, Cologne, Hanover, Dortmund, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Bochum and many others.

  • Introduction of the environmental vignette in 2008
  • Distinction according to four groups of pollutants
  • Level system: Red, yellow and green emblem
  • The license plate combination on the license plate and on the sticker must match!
  • The sticker must be affixed to the right front windshield in a clearly visible place.
  • Consequence of entering environmental zones without a sticker -> sanctions / fines
  • Exceptional regulations for entering environmental zones even without a green sticker
  • Discussion on the introduction of the blue badge

What else do you have to consider?

First, you assign your vehicle’s emission class to the emission standard under which the environmental label is awarded.

Tip: Your vehicle’s emission class is on the vehicle’s documents and is also referred to as the emission key number. During sticker verification , you can determine which sticker your vehicle can carry.

You should also bear in mind that you run the risk of being fined €100 if you enter an environmental zone without a sticker or with an unauthorized sticker (red or yellow).

Environmental zones

  • Introduction to reducing nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in the air (increased risk of lung disease, cardiovascular disease, asthma and allergies)
  • The annual limit set across Europe is 40 µg/m3
  • The fine dust sticker is valid in all environmental zones in Germany
  • With the exception of Neu-Ulm (yellow adhesive), the particle green adhesive is mandatory (pollutant group 4)
  • 57 environmental zones in Germany (as of April 2018)
  • Introduction of diesel bans in some municipalities
  • Environmental zones and diesel bans abroad

The umweltplakette environmental sticker is therefore also known as a green sticker, a Euro 4 sticker or a fine dust sticker. In addition to Germany, it also applies in several EU countries, such as France (Crit’Air).
